Screen Time

Conflict over screen time rules has become one of the most common issues in my parent coaching practice over the past few years. Concern over the amount of time, enforcing household rules, and what to do when rules are violated are regular conversations—and with good reason. As discussed in Chapter 1, screen time use is linked to many mental health concerns, including increases in anxiety and depression. Furthermore, screen time is addictive, with a similar neurological impact as heroin and cocaine use. Managing screen time with our children is important. But conflict isn’t always a bad thing. There is great potential for increased empathy and the potential to further teach social-emotional skills with every conversation.

In this scenario, we will examine how to use screen time rule violations as an opportunity to practice emotional flexibility and empathy skills.
